It’ll be a surprise to find that currently there is only one newspaper that runs a subscription service for games.

Why a surprise?

Well, newspapers are often among the first to look at providing their own version of new services that spring up. After all, the most popular among them have a dedicated reader base many of whom will have been readers for years. An easy(ish) way of pulling in some extra cash perhaps?

Maybe in this case the competition is too strong. They’ll be competing with Xbox Game Pass, PS Now, and a multitude of Cloud game services. Maybe the feeling is there won’t be enough subscribers to make it financially viable. Or maybe it’s that this aspect of the games industry is not mature enough, and more proof of the subscription model working is needed before more newspapers climb aboard.

Whatever the reason, it’s sure to change. For now though, the one that is offering a games service for subscribers is the NY Times.
